Hello from the Desk of the Oppy!
The issue that awaits you is a confirmation of something that we've always known…Sternies have A LOT to say. The breadth of entertaining, enlightening, and inspiring commentary that we received for this issue far exceeded our typical 20-page format. Thus, we bring you MEGA OPPY, the first of, hopefully, many 24-page tomes of Sternaliciousness that will delight and excite the entire community.
Along with our tried-and-true favorites, new talent abounds in this issue. In the return of the classic column "Outside the Lines," Caroline Schimmelbusch treats us to an in-depth discussion of the state of the investment banking industry (cover). MBA1 Nima Shomali takes an introspective look at how the politics of fear and uncertainty motivate our behavior (page 18). Larisa Terkeltaub makes Professor Okun proud with her musings on the entrepreneurial opportunity that Halloween costumes present (page 10). Judd Pratt-Heaney adds balance and depth to the storm that followed the recent Gap logo fiasco. This issue is also stacked with campus news, including another round of the popular "Club Corner," featuring the Stern Soccer Team, The Luxury & Retail Club, TANG, EEX, Stern Adventures, and more.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. In our opinion, we do some of the most fun work on campus! While we're on the topic, we'd like to close today with the exciting announcement of the editorial team that will take the Oppy into its future. Congratulations to Co-Editors in Chief-in-training Shaila Dani and Michael Wang, in addition to Content Editors-in-training Caroline Schimmelbusch and Chavon Sutton. We are confident that this team will take leadership of the Oppy to new heights and we are thrilled to have them on board. We will officially pass the torch of leadership during publication of the March 1st, 2011, issue but please congratulate these four enterprising MBA1s and wish them well during their training period!
Happy Reading!
